Colombian President Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if US Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs narcotics facilities and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions and Allegations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump threatened analogous use of force against Colombia, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and governed by a sick man involved in producing narcotics and trafficking it to the US."

Although Colombia is the leading source of the narcotic, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the trade.

A Deteriorating Partnership

The country was historically a key ally of the US in the fight against drug trafficking and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened significantly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom demobilised following a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Firm Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if armed intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump replied: "It sounds good from my perspective."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the last century, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader and I am not a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he wrote online.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And should they arrest the president, which many of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will unleash the powerful force of the nation," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed that he never took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he took part in writing a new constitution over three decades ago and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of Bogotá before winning the presidency.

"I swore not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I would take up the fight," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Rejection

Colombia's defense chief announced that the president’s protection team had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump, but voices from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the notion of a US attack against their nation.

Political and Economic Pressure

American authorities cancelled the president's entry visa following he called on US military personnel to disobey any illegal orders. In October, it placed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and bombing suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted attacks on boats in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
