Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
