In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
